Location: Warfield
This stunning glass room extension has transformed a detached property in Warfield, creating a bright and contemporary living area that enhances both the home and the family’s lifestyle.
The homeowners wanted to modernise their property and create a new space connecting the kitchen and dining area to the garden. After researching several aluminium glass box extensions, they were unsure whether a conservatory or an orangery would best suit their needs. Their main objective was to create a bright, open-plan room filled with natural light, improve access to the garden, and achieve a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor living.
After discussing their ideas with our design team, the homeowners chose a bespoke glass extension to maximise their garden views while delivering exceptional thermal performance and a modern architectural style.

To achieve the homeowners’ vision, we designed and installed a bespoke glass room extension that replaced the rear corner of the property. Structural alterations were required to open up the existing layout and create a fully integrated living space.
The finished design features a fully glazed structure with expansive glazing, a modern glass roofing system, and two elevations of aluminium bi-fold doors that open directly onto the garden.
Unlike traditional brick-built extensions, modern glass boxes create uninterrupted views and allow daylight to penetrate deep into the home. The use of large glass panels and slim aluminium frames gives the extension a light, minimalist aesthetic while ensuring high levels of performance and durability.
The result is a space that feels open, contemporary, and connected to the surrounding garden throughout the year.
The detached property is located in the highly desirable Woodhurst Park development in Warfield, built by Berkeley Homes. Woodhurst Park is known for its attractive homes, landscaped surroundings, and convenient location just a short drive from the historic market town of Wokingham and The Lexicon shopping centre in Bracknell.
The homeowners wanted their new glass room extension to complement the modern character of their home while adding a striking architectural feature to the rear elevation.
Our designer, Michael, first contacted the homeowners to arrange a consultation at our Bracknell showroom. During the meeting, he discussed their ideas in detail and explained the different styles of glass box extensions available.
After reviewing several design options, Michael recommended the Solarlux SDL Avantgarde Wintergarden, a premium glass extension system known for its contemporary design and excellent performance.
Working closely with the homeowners, Michael prepared detailed drawings and visual plans to illustrate how the glass extension would integrate with the existing property. The design incorporated large glazed panels, slim aluminium frames, and a modern glass roof to create a spacious, light-filled room.
Once the design was finalised, the homeowners confirmed their choice of the SDL Avantgarde Wintergarden.
Because of the project’s scale and structure, planning permission was required before work could begin. Our team supported the homeowners throughout the entire process.
Michael project-managed the application, providing architectural drawings, structural calculations, and liaising with the local authority to ensure all requirements were met.
The extension was also designed to comply fully with building regulations, ensuring structural integrity, insulation performance, and long-term durability.
This comprehensive approach helped make the project as smooth and stress-free as possible for the homeowners.
The homeowners selected Solarlux Ecoline aluminium bi-folding doors combined with the SDL Avantgarde roof system.
The exterior and interior aluminium frames were finished in RAL 7016 anthracite grey, a sophisticated charcoal-toned shade that has become extremely popular in modern architecture.
Anthracite grey offers a refined, contemporary appearance while complementing a wide range of brickwork and exterior materials. Its deep tone creates contrast against lighter surfaces while still blending naturally with surrounding textures.
In bright light, the colour reveals subtle grey undertones, while in lower light it can appear almost black. This versatility helps highlight architectural details without overpowering the overall design.
A key element of the project was achieving exceptional thermal performance and comfort throughout the year.
The entire glass room extension uses high-performance glazing, including Pilkington toughened low-E glass. The glazing units are double-glazed and filled with argon gas to improve insulation and reduce heat transfer.
The roof incorporates advanced solar control glass, which allows natural light to enter while limiting excessive solar gain during warmer months. The roof glass also features self-cleaning technology, reducing maintenance while keeping the glazing clear and bright.
Together, these features ensure the extension remains comfortable throughout the seasons while reducing energy loss and supporting the home’s energy efficiency.
One of the most striking elements of the extension is its frameless glass appearance. Slim aluminium frames support large glazed panels, creating the effect of a modern glass pavilion.
Two elevations of bi-fold doors allow the space to open completely onto the garden. When fully folded back, the doors create a wide, barrier-free opening that allows the indoor and outdoor spaces to merge.
The homeowners also considered installing a triple-glazed sliding door system, but ultimately chose bifold doors because they allow the entire wall to open up on warm days.
The floor-to-ceiling glazing ensures uninterrupted garden views while allowing abundant natural light to flood into the kitchen and dining areas.
To enhance the space during the evening, discreet lighting was integrated into the extension’s interior structure.
Special rafter covers were designed to accommodate low-voltage downlights, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere after sunset. The homeowners also chose Solarlux pleated blinds for the bi-fold doors to provide additional shading and privacy when required.
These features allow the space to function comfortably throughout the day and evening, whether the family is relaxing, entertaining guests, or enjoying quiet time together.
Solarlux is widely recognised as a leading manufacturer of high-quality aluminium glass extensions and architectural glazing systems.
Every system is custom-made in Germany using advanced engineering and precision manufacturing techniques.
The system also includes integrated structural support, drainage channels, and weather protection elements, ensuring long-term durability and excellent performance.
Because every installation is bespoke, Solarlux glass box extensions can be tailored to suit a range of architectural styles and property types.
The finished glass room extension measures approximately 6.23 metres wide by 5.87 metres deep, creating a generous additional living space at the rear of the property.
This footprint maximises the available garden-facing area while ensuring the extension integrates seamlessly with the existing home.
The large glazed elevations, combined with the glass roof, create an open and airy environment that feels far larger than its physical dimensions.
The completed extension has dramatically changed how the family uses their home.
Morning sunlight now fills the kitchen and dining areas, while the open-plan layout creates a central hub where the family can cook, relax, and spend time together.
During the warmer months, the bi-fold doors can be fully opened, allowing the garden to become an extension of the living space. In cooler seasons, the insulated glazing helps keep the room warm and comfortable.
The extension effectively functions as a modern winter garden, providing year-round enjoyment of the surrounding landscape.
The new glass room extension has added both visual impact and practical living space to the Warfield property.
From the outside, the contemporary glass box extension creates a striking architectural feature that enhances the home’s rear elevation. Internally, the bright, open room offers a versatile space for family gatherings, entertaining guests, or simply enjoying the garden view.
Most importantly, the project has transformed the homeowners’ lifestyle by creating a space that connects the home with the outdoors while delivering comfort, efficiency, and modern design.
The homeowners were delighted with the finished result and the dramatic transformation of their property.
