Bespoke Timber Windows for Luxury Home Renovation, Curridge

Location: Curridge, Thatcham, Berkshire

Transforming a Berkshire Country Home with Bespoke Timber Windows

Nestled within beautifully landscaped gardens in the sought-after Berkshire village of Curridge, in Thatcham, just outside the thriving market town of Newbury, this exceptional country residence has undergone a remarkable building renovation. Occupying an elevated position with panoramic countryside views, the property combines contemporary rural architecture with timeless design, creating a luxurious family home that embraces light, space and its stunning surroundings.

A key element of the renovation was replacing the original white uPVC Georgian windows with handcrafted bespoke timber windows that better reflected the quality and character of the property. The result is an elegant collection of Victorian sliding sash and traditional casement windows, individually manufactured to complement the architecture while delivering outstanding energy efficiency and modern performance.

Although this property is not a listed building or located within a conservation area, the homeowners wanted their new wooden windows to possess the authentic detailing typically associated with heritage properties.

Replacing White uPVC Windows with Bespoke Timber Windows

The homeowners wanted every aspect of the renovation to feel refined and timeless. The existing white uPVC Georgian windows no longer suited the architectural vision, so they commissioned Thames Valley Windows to design and install a complete collection of bespoke timber windows throughout the property.

Working alongside our designer, George, every window was carefully designed to create balanced sightlines, elegant proportions and traditional detailing.

The completed installation combines handcrafted Victorian sliding sash windows with matching timber windows in a traditional casement design, ensuring visual consistency across every elevation.

The new windows and doors sit beautifully within the rendered façade, complementing the stone cills, impressive entrance porch and dramatic roof lantern that floods the home with natural daylight.

A Sophisticated Colour Palette Inspired by Nature

The exterior frames are factory finished in Farrow & Ball Mizzle No.266, while the interior is finished in Wimborne White No.239, creating a beautifully understated contrast.

Named after misty West Country skies, Mizzle No.266 is a calming grey-green that sits perfectly against the off-white K-Rend exterior, black slate roof and surrounding countryside.

Inside, Wimborne White provides a warm off-white finish that enhances the abundance of natural light while complementing both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Together, these colours create a timeless appearance that allows the craftsmanship of the bespoke timber frames to take centre stage.

Bespoke Timber Windows Designed to Last

Every window was manufactured using engineered European Redwood, chosen for its exceptional strength, stability and resistance to twisting and warping.

The Victorian sliding sash windows include numerous traditional design features, including:

  • Victorian glazing bar arrangement
  • Decorative sash horns
  • Deep bottom rails
  • Finger pulls
  • Polished gold furniture
  • Authentic timber sightlines

Matching casement windows were fitted with elegant F&F polished gold teardrop handles, ensuring complete continuity throughout the property.

Each of the wooden windows has been factory finished with five coats of high-performance microporous paint, providing excellent weather protection while significantly reducing future maintenance.

Traditional Craftsmanship with Modern Performance

While preserving traditional character was a priority, the homeowners also wanted the latest glazing technology discreetly incorporated within their new timber windows.

Every window includes:

  • High-performance double glazing
  • Argon gas-filled sealed units
  • Low-emissivity (Low-E) glass
  • Warm-edge spacer bars
  • Toughened safety glass where required
  • Multi-point locking systems
  • High-performance weather seals

The sliding sash windows utilise modern spiral balances that replicate the smooth operation of traditional sash windows while eliminating the need for weights and pulleys.

This combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern engineering delivers exceptional comfort, security and thermal performance while complying with current Building Regulations for replacement glazing.

Attention to Every Detail

Throughout the project, George worked closely with the homeowners to ensure every design decision reflected the quality of the renovation.

Consistent sightlines were maintained across both the sliding sash and casement windows, while carefully proportioned glazing bars create balance and symmetry throughout the façade.

The polished gold ironmongery provides a luxurious finishing touch that complements both the Mizzle No.266 exterior and the warm interior colour palette.

Every aspect of the design demonstrates the level of craftsmanship expected from truly bespoke timber joinery.

Sustainable Timber Windows for Modern Living

As more homeowners undertake high-quality building renovation projects, timber continues to be one of the most sustainable materials available for replacement windows and doors.

Engineered timber is a renewable resource with excellent natural insulating properties, making it an environmentally responsible choice without compromising aesthetics or longevity.

Combined with the property’s insulated black slate roof, integrated photovoltaic solar panels and ecology-led bat-friendly roof design, the new bespoke timber windows contribute towards a highly energy-efficient home designed for modern family living.
