An impressive set of six-panel dark aluminium metallic Highline bifold doors has helped transform this impressive detached property in Teddington, creating a light-filled open-plan kitchen extension with an almost seamless connection to the garden.

This exceptional detached family home occupies a desirable position on one of Teddington’s popular River Roads, close to the River Thames and Teddington’s exclusive riverside meadows.
The location offers an attractive combination of residential living, green open spaces and excellent local amenities, with Teddington High Street and Kingston town centre both within easy reach. Scenic riverside walks lead towards Kingston, Richmond and Ham, while nearby Teddington Lock is one of the area’s best-known landmarks.
Bushy Park, one of London’s largest Royal Parks and famous for its free-roaming deer, is also only a short distance away.
After purchasing the property, the homeowners wanted to modernise their new family home and replace the existing windows and bifold doors, which were no longer providing the level of thermal efficiency they required.

The dimensions of the proposed glazed areas meant that structural stability, performance and panel size all needed careful consideration. Due to the height and width of the openings, Marcus recommended the Solarlux Highline aluminium bi-fold system.
Its strong aluminium construction enables generous panel dimensions while maintaining exceptionally slim frames, making it particularly well suited to ambitious extensions where homeowners want to maximise the amount of glass and natural light entering their living space.
Marcus also recommended Internorm HF410 composite windows throughout the property, completing a coordinated glazing solution focused on aesthetics, comfort and long-term performance.
The German-designed and manufactured Solarlux Highline is an award-winning thermally broken bifold door system engineered for demanding architectural applications.
Unlike conventional sliding patio doors, bifold systems can fold almost entirely away when opened. For this Teddington extension, that means the homeowners can open up virtually the full width of the rear elevation rather than retaining fixed overlapping glazed panels.
Highline external bifold doors combine slim architectural detailing with impressive structural performance. A sophisticated fibreglass-reinforced polyamide bionicTURTLE® thermal break helps minimise heat transfer through the aluminium frame, contributing to the system’s excellent insulation properties.
With profile dimensions of approximately 99mm, Highline provides impressively slender sightlines while accommodating individual door panels of up to approximately 1.1 metres wide and 3.5 metres high, subject to specification and configuration.
Depending on the glazing and overall configuration selected, the system can accommodate double or triple glazing and achieve excellent thermal values.

The double-glazed Climaguard units incorporate argon gas, a soft-coat Low-E glass finish and black spacer bars. Together, these features help improve thermal efficiency and maintain more comfortable interior temperatures throughout the seasons.
Where triple glazing is specified, Highline can provide even greater levels of insulation, with configurations capable of achieving impressive overall U-values.

Security was another important consideration within the glazing specification.
Highline doors incorporate sophisticated security technology and a multi-point locking system to protect the large glazed opening. Depending on the specification, the system can achieve RC3 burglary resistance, demonstrating the level of engineering incorporated into the product.
The first panel can open independently and function as an everyday traffic door, meaning the homeowners do not need to fold back the complete system every time they want to access the garden.
The combination of robust aluminium profiles, secure locking components and carefully engineered hardware provides additional peace of mind without detracting from the minimalist appearance of the doors.
Solarlux systems are also rigorously tested for important performance characteristics including air permeability, water tightness and resistance to wind loads.
