This beautiful detached family home, located along a peaceful village lane near the market town of Alton, Hampshire, has been transformed with a bespoke glazing installation featuring Solarlux Combiline bi-fold doors. Surrounded by scenic countryside views and open outdoor spaces, the property already enjoyed a charming character, but the homeowners wanted to enhance their rear lounge extension with a more modern, durable and energy-efficient solution.
The project centred around a striking gable end design that would maximise natural light, open up the living space and create uninterrupted views of the garden and surrounding countryside. The homeowners were existing Thames Valley Windows customers, having trusted us with previous installations since 2012, so we were delighted when they returned to us once again for advice on replacing their ageing hardwood bifold doors.
The original timber bifold doors and matching triangular glazed section had begun to deteriorate after years of exposure to the south-east facing elevation. While the homeowners loved the warmth and appearance of timber internally, they were keen to find a more weather-resistant and low-maintenance alternative that would still complement the rest of the property.
After discussing the homeowners’ requirements in detail, our designer, Ray, recommended visiting our Bracknell showroom to explore the latest glazing options. Following a consultation and product demonstration, the homeowners selected the Solarlux Combiline bi-fold system, an exceptional wood-aluminium solution that combines the beauty of natural timber internally with a durable aluminium cover externally.
The Combiline bi-fold door offers the best of both worlds. The interior timber finish creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere, while the aluminium exterior provides outstanding weather protection and long-term durability. This innovative combination makes it an ideal choice for homeowners seeking high-quality glazing that delivers both performance and aesthetics.
One of the standout features of this installation is the impressive glazed gable end structure. Measuring approximately 4200mm high and 4150mm wide, the design takes full advantage of the room’s vaulted ceiling to create a dramatic architectural focal point.
The lower section features five-panel Combiline bifold doors with slim sightlines that maximise glass area and natural daylight. Above the bi-fold door system sits a bespoke-shaped fixed frame that aligns perfectly with the folding panels below, creating a series of beautifully framed picture windows that draw the eye upwards towards the sky.
The result is a bright and airy living environment flooded with natural light throughout the day. Even when the doors are closed, the extensive glazing ensures uninterrupted garden views and a strong connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces.
The homeowners chose meranti wood finished in teak internally, while externally the frames were colour matched in RAL 8016 mahogany brown to complement the property’s existing Evolution timber-effect windows and doors previously installed by Thames Valley Windows.
As well as offering stunning aesthetics, the Solarlux Combiline system provides exceptional thermal efficiency, security and ease of use. With overall U-values as low as 1.1 W/m²K, the doors help keep the home warm in winter and cool during the summer months.
The advanced engineering behind the system includes Solarlux’s innovative bionicTURTLE® technology, which allows for slim yet incredibly strong frames. Even with large glass panels, the system maintains excellent insulation and smooth operation.
The five-panel configuration also includes a convenient everyday external door, allowing the homeowners to use the doors like a standard back door without needing to fully fold the system each time. During warmer months and social gatherings, the entire elevation can be opened up effortlessly, allowing the lounge and garden to flow seamlessly together.
