Location: Hindhead, Surrey
A beautifully designed Georgian-style timber front door has created an elegant new entrance for this impressive double-gabled detached home in Hindhead, Surrey.
As part of an extensive refurbishment, Thames Valley Windows supplied and installed the bespoke solid timber entrance door alongside new double-glazed aïr MOD Heritage windows and patio doors. Finished in RAL 7033 Cement Grey, the complete installation brings a coordinated contemporary update to the property while respecting its traditional architectural character.
The detached property is nestled in Beacon Hill, Hindhead, a desirable village setting within the Surrey Hills National Landscape. Surrounded by beautiful countryside, Hindhead offers an attractive combination of rural tranquillity and convenient access to the historic market towns of Haslemere and Farnham.
The area is particularly renowned for the National Trust’s Devil’s Punch Bowl and Hindhead Commons, with miles of open heathland and woodland.
After purchasing their home in 2021, the homeowners began an extensive refurbishment to update the property around their lifestyle while retaining its traditional appeal.
One important part of the renovation was replacing the original white uPVC front door, leaded windows and patio doors with a more sympathetic, high-quality glazing and entrance solution.
Having been impressed by a Thames Valley Windows installation at a family member’s home, the homeowners contacted us for a free, no-obligation quotation.
Our designer, Paul Mills, worked closely with the homeowners to create a coordinated specification for the windows, patio doors and new entrance.
For the front of the property, they selected a bespoke Georgian-style timber front door handcrafted from European Redwood.
While traditional Georgian front doors take their inspiration from the Georgian period, this bespoke design combines classic proportions with the performance expected from a modern external door. Georgian architecture is particularly associated with balance, proportion and symmetry, making a panel design an excellent choice for a property with traditional architectural features.
The door features a four-panel configuration, with symmetrical panels creating a balanced appearance reminiscent of entrance doors from the Georgian era.
Finished in RAL 7033 Cement Grey, the door coordinates beautifully with the new aïr MOD Heritage windows and patio doors. The understated paint finish also works particularly well against the property’s white rendered porch and traditional brickwork.
An important element of the door design was introducing more natural light into the entrance and hallway.
The Georgian style door incorporates two glazed sections within the upper panels, featuring toughened double glazing with an Arena Black sandblasted design. These provide privacy while allowing daylight to filter through the entrance.
Two tall glazed sidelights frame the door, further increasing the amount of natural light entering the porch and central hallway.
These glazing options help give the entrance a lighter, more welcoming appearance without compromising the traditional character of the panelled door.
Chrome door furniture provides the finishing touch, with a letterplate, finger-pull lock and thumb turn creating a crisp contrast against the Cement Grey finish. A high-security locking system provides additional reassurance while maintaining the clean appearance of the entrance.
Solid timber remains an excellent material for traditional and contemporary entrance doors, combining natural character with strength, insulation and longevity.
Our bespoke timber entrance doors are 60mm thick and manufactured from premium-grade, multi-layered wood. This construction provides greater structural stability and durability while helping the door resist twisting and warping.
Modern timber technology also means homeowners no longer have to choose between traditional aesthetics and contemporary performance. Our timber windows and doors are treated to provide resistance against atmospheric deterioration, mould and rot while requiring relatively little maintenance.
Combined with modern glazing, weather seals and secure locking systems, today’s timber doors bring improved security and thermal efficiency to a classic design.
Our timber products are manufactured by highly skilled craftspeople, with the timber guaranteed for 30 years against rot and fungus.
Every property is different, which is why we offer a range of bespoke entrance door styles suitable for period renovations and contemporary homes.
You can personalise the doors with numerous options, including panel configurations, glazed sections, hardware, and finishes. Homeowners can select from an extensive palette of RAL and Farrow & Ball colours as well as 16 timber stain finishes.
We also provide a variety of glazing options, ranging from understated privacy glass to stained and leaded glass designs. This makes it possible to create traditional doors featuring decorative details that complement the age and individual character of a property.
For homeowners who love the look of a Georgian-style door but prefer an alternative material, other entrance solutions, such as a composite door, can also recreate elements of traditional Georgian styling. However, genuine timber provides a distinctive depth, texture and craftsmanship particularly suited to character homes.
The finished installation demonstrates how carefully considered design can modernise a home without losing its traditional identity.
The Cement Grey Georgian-style timber front door, symmetrical four-panel design, decorative glazing and elegant sidelights now form a natural focal point beneath the white rendered porch. Together with the coordinating heritage windows and patio doors, the entrance feels considered, welcoming and perfectly suited to the property.

For homeowners considering Georgian front doors, bespoke timber provides an opportunity to combine the proportions and elegance associated with the Georgian era with modern security, insulation and glazing performance.
