Georgian Sliding Sash Windows for a Period Country House, Winkfield Row

Location: Winkfield Row

Restoring the Charm of a Historic Berkshire Home

This stunning country house in Winkfield Row, Berkshire, has been beautifully transformed with the installation of bespoke Georgian sliding sash windows, breathing new life into a historic property located within a designated conservation area.

Surrounded by picturesque countryside and positioned in the heart of this charming semi-rural village, the whitewashed farmhouse enjoys spectacular views across the Berkshire landscape. Originally forming part of a grand 19th-century estate dating back to around 1820, the building was later divided into individual family homes while retaining much of its original Georgian character.

As with many historic properties, preserving its architectural heritage while improving comfort and energy performance was the homeowners’ highest priority.

The Challenges of Ageing Original Sash Windows

Although full of character, the property’s original timber sash windows had reached the end of their service life. Years of exposure to the elements had caused significant deterioration, leaving the windows draughty, inefficient, and difficult to operate.

During the colder months, the homeowners experienced uncomfortable indoor temperatures, persistent condensation, and rising heating costs. The ageing single-glazing offered little insulation, reducing both the property’s thermal efficiency and acoustic performance.

As part of a wider renovation project, the owners decided it was the ideal opportunity to replace the original windows with handcrafted Georgian sash windows that would respect the building’s historic appearance while delivering the benefits of modern window technology.

Designing Authentic Georgian Sliding Sash Windows

Our designer, George, worked closely with the homeowners to understand their vision for the renovation. Following an initial consultation, they visited our Bracknell showroom to explore different timber window options and discuss the most appropriate solution for their period home.

The brief was clear. The replacement windows needed to faithfully recreate the original Georgian appearance, preserving the traditional sightlines, elegant proportions, and timeless architectural details that define this classic window style.

After carefully reviewing the available options, the homeowners selected our bespoke engineered European Redwood vertical sliding sash windows, factory-finished in classic RAL 9010 White. The polished chrome ironmongery complemented both the interior décor and the traditional exterior, creating a refined period finish.

Every element of the design was carefully considered to maintain authenticity, from the proportions of the glazing to the placement of the glazing bars and traditional sash horns, ensuring the windows looked entirely in keeping with the age of the property.

Traditional Craftsmanship Meets Modern Performance

While maintaining a traditional appearance was essential, the homeowners also wanted the latest energy-saving features hidden discreetly within the design.

Each window was manufactured using engineered European Redwood, providing exceptional strength, stability, and resistance to twisting or warping over time. The timber was factory-finished with high-performance microporous coatings to maximise durability while minimising ongoing maintenance.

The new Georgian sliding sash windows feature smooth-operating pre-tensioned spring balances, offering the classic movement of traditional sash windows without the need for old-style weights and pulleys.

Every window incorporates an authentic Georgian bar arrangement, carefully designed to replicate the symmetry associated with Georgian architecture. The result perfectly balances period aesthetics with modern engineering.

To maximise energy performance, every unit was fitted with low-emissivity toughened glass, argon gas-filled double glazing, and warm edge spacer bars. This specification significantly improves insulation while complying fully with current Part L Building Regulations.

Discreetly integrated trickle vent systems were also included, allowing continuous background ventilation to reduce condensation and improve indoor air quality without compromising the elegant appearance of the windows.

Overcoming Installation Challenges

Although the manufacturing process was straightforward, installing replacement windows into a property of this age presented several technical challenges.

Once work commenced, it became apparent that the existing structural framework surrounding the original sash boxes was more complex than initially anticipated. The property’s internal box shutters required the new windows to be installed from the exterior to preserve the original architectural detailing.

To complete the installation safely and accurately, additional specialist labour and external scaffolding were required. This approach allowed the installation team to position each window correctly while protecting the property’s historic fabric and maintaining the original reveal depths.

Careful planning and precision craftsmanship ensured every new window aligned perfectly with the existing openings, delivering an exceptional finished result.

A Stunning Transformation Inside and Out

The completed installation has dramatically enhanced both the appearance and performance of this beautiful country home.

From the outside, the elegant proportions, authentic detailing, and traditional Georgian bar design seamlessly complement the historic architecture. The carefully designed sash horns and period sightlines ensure the replacement windows are virtually indistinguishable from traditional originals.

Inside, the difference is equally impressive. Larger glazed areas allow natural light to flood the rooms, creating bright, welcoming living spaces while framing uninterrupted views across the surrounding Berkshire countryside.

The homeowners immediately noticed the improvement in comfort. Thanks to the enhanced thermal efficiency of the new double-glazed units, the property now remains significantly warmer throughout the winter while reducing heat loss and lowering energy consumption.

Improved acoustic insulation has also created a quieter, more peaceful indoor environment.

Preserving Georgian Character for Future Generations

Georgian architecture remains one of Britain’s most admired design periods, celebrated for its elegance, balance, and symmetry. Dating from 1714 to 1830 during the reigns of the four King Georges, this architectural style continues to inspire homeowners renovating period properties today.

One of the defining features of Georgian homes is the use of carefully proportioned georgian sash windows, recognised by their symmetrical glazing patterns and timeless elegance.

By choosing bespoke timber vertical sliding sash windows, the homeowners have successfully preserved the historic character of their property while enjoying the advantages of modern manufacturing, enhanced security, and excellent energy performance.

The completed renovation demonstrates that it is entirely possible to upgrade historic homes with modern double glazing without compromising their heritage or architectural integrity.
