Solarlux Wintergarden Glazed Extension, Wokingham

Location: Wokingham

This beautiful detached property in Wokingham has been completely revitalised with a Solarlux Wintergarden glazed extension that has transformed the ground floor area by creating a luxurious open plan living space filled with natural light.

Thames Valley Windows had been recommended to the Wokingham homeowners, and just before lockdown 2020, we designed and installed energy-efficient double glazed uPVC windows and doors throughout the whole property.

The homeowners wanted to create an open plan dining/living room by replacing their old and outdated conservatory with a contemporary single-storey Orangery.

Part of their brief was to remove the old patio doors between the house and conservatory to create a bright and spacious open plan living space extending from the dining area they could use all year round.

Our architectural designer Michael visited the Wokingham property to discuss the options and recommended a Solarlux Wintergarden glazed extension would be the perfect choice for connecting the two rooms.

Michael invited the homeowners into the Bracknell showroom to see the Wintergarden we have on display and explore the full range of products. He also designed a couple of 3D architectural visualisations showing the various door options and colours so that the Wokingham homeowners could visualise the Wintergarden glazed extension. This service was beneficial to the homeowners to envisage, discuss and choose the final design for their approval before survey and manufacture.

Michael worked closely with a Solarlux surveyor, who provided the technical drawings for the elevations of the Wintergarden glazed extension project. The homeowners were happy with the overall design and opted for a stunning Wintergarden glazed extension with Ecoline bi-folding doors and a modern glass SDL Akzent Plus roof.

All the aluminium profiles are thermally broken and finished in a tiger fine powder coated glimmer grey colour DB703.

The Wintergarden glazed extension project did not require planning permission approval as we were replacing an existing conservatory so is covered under building regulations.

Thames Valley Windows coordinated the entire project with various trades, including the builder, plasterer, plumber and electrician, to ensure the building schedule went to plan.

Once the Wintergarden was in production, the builders were on-site to remove the old conservatory, dig new footings and build a side wall ready for the Wintergarden to be installed. They also removed the dining room’s back wall and installed an RSJ to support the opening to the structural engineer’s specification. To create the open plan living space, they also removed all of the plaster from the walls and ceiling in the dining room.

Our installation team arrived at the property in early June and worked quickly and professionally so that the Wintergarden was installed and the property was watertight within six days.

Soon after, the different tradesmen were scheduled to return to complete the interior work of plastering and electrics.

The stunning Wintergarden is the perfect enhancement to this Bracknell home and remains sympathetic to the property’s aesthetics. The homeowners now benefit from a thermally insulated home extension that all the family can enjoy all year round

The beauty of this Wintergarden is the Solarlux’s Ecoline bi-folding doors that offer the slimmest sightlines to provide a minimalist glazing solution of floor to ceiling wall creating a seamless transition between the inside and outside.

Although all of the glazing in the glass box extension is solar heat reflective, the homeowners wanted to ensure that the Wintergarden did not get too hot in the summer they opted for an internal shading system. They chose a motorised awning for the triple glazed glass roof and pleated blinds for the bifold doors to protect the room from the summer glare and high temperatures.

The electric roof vent allows for fresh air to enter the room when the bifold doors are closed.

The roof glass panels are self-cleaning. Instead of forming droplets of organic dirt on the surface, it attracts rainwater to spread and forms a thin film that washes away quickly and dries off without leaving unattractive drying spots.

The end result of this home renovation project is stunning. The sleek and elegant Wintergarden glazed extension compliments the architectural design of their home.

The Bracknell homeowners are delighted with their Wintergarden glazed extension and advised of the following:

We chose TVW after having several recommendations from close friends and neighbours and having seen their vans working in our road on many occasions. We felt our quote was somewhere in the middle of the ones we received and decided to go ahead, as personal recommendations are always the best advert.

We had the doors and windows replaced on the whole house, which we were very pleased with, immediately noticing that they made the house much warmer and quieter. Then lockdown hit, giving us time to decide that we wanted to replace our old conservatory, which had seen better days. On visiting us, Michael from TVW explained that a Wintergarden would be the best fit for our house and that TVW could manage the whole job from design, installation, supplying the trades to complete the build, and project manage the entire job. This took the strain out of trying to organise everything ourselves.

Admittedly, the job took quite a while to complete, but this was mainly due to a lack of materials and extended wait times, which is a countrywide problem. We are pleased to say that the work is now complete and we are delighted with the results. Our room feels modern, spacious, and easy to maintain, and the light we get into the back of the house now is amazing.

We would highly recommend TVW for both windows, doors and if you are considering a winter garden/conservatory orangery The quality of all the work is excellent.
