Traditional Georgian Sash Windows, Farmhouse Renovation, Goring on Thames

Location: Goring on Thames

Traditional Georgian Sash Windows has given this beautiful farmhouse in Goring on Thames a new lease of life.

It had been six years since our clients purchased an Internorm HS330 timber/aluminium lift and slide door from us for their kitchen extension! As an independent family business, customer satisfaction is important, so we were thrilled that the Goring on Thames homeowners returned to us for an architectural glazing solution.

The beautiful farmhouse is nestled in the heart of the village of Goring on Thames in a stunning location with lovely countryside views.

Goring on Thames is also known as the ‘Goring Gap’ it was awarded the prestigious Oxfordshire Village of the Year in 2009. It is set between the Chiltern Hills and Berkshire Downlands with the River Thames that flows from Oxford down to Reading.

This stretch of the river is regarded as one of the most beautiful stretches and is associated with Jerome K Jerome’s book “Three Men in a Boat and”Kenneth Grahame’s enduring book “The Wind in the Willows”.

Goring on the Thames is characterised by its beautiful period properties, some of which are within a Conservation area, so they are of significant architectural and historical interest.

Over the last few years, the Goring on Thames homeowners found their home was chilly during the winter months, and the single-glazed wooden sliding sash windows were in poor condition, suffered from condensation, and were very draughty.

They were starting some renovations to their family home. They decided that their original sash windows needed to be replaced with high-performance, energy-efficient Georgian sash windows to enhance the character of the farmhouse and provide outstanding thermal and acoustic performance.

Our sales director and designer, Paul Mills, contacted the homeowners to discuss their renovation plans and listened to their requirements.

The Goring on Thames homeowners made an appointment to visit our Bracknell showroom to view the range of Georgian-style windows on display.

The homeowner’s brief was they required replacement timber sash windows that would restore the traditional period sightlines to preserve the character and history of the property.

After discussing the various options, the homeowners chose our factory-finished engineered European Redwood timber sliding sash Georgian windows finished in RAL9010 white with polished gold ironmongery and traditional cords & weights to add an authentic period aesthetic to the interior.

Attention to detail and impeccable quality were key for this home renovation project. Paul ensured he designed the sightlines to offer the best aesthetic appearance with correct symmetry and proportion.

The low e toughened double-glazed units with transparent white warm edge spacer bar and argon gas fill ensure Part L Building Regulations compliance.

The Georgian sash windows feature two sashes that slide up and down with a smooth movement by a modern pre-tensioned spring balance. They have been designed with the traditional Georgian bar eight-over-eight design, creating perfect symmetry.

The end result is stunning. The symmetry and proportion of the replacement sash windows have greatly influenced the Georgian period aesthetic appearance, allowing natural light to flood the home and provide a light and airy interior. The homeowners can now take advantage of the beautiful Oxfordshire countryside views.

As part of this farmhouse renovation, we also removed three windows from the rear of the property. We replaced them with an impressive large sliding door which spans almost the whole breadth of the dining room, allowing natural light to brighten up the living space and provide a seamless connection between inside and outside.

The Goring on Thames farmhouse is a spectacular family home of exceptional quality and bespoke craftsmanship throughout and has been sympathetically renovated to the homeowner’s high-end specifications. The double-glazed Georgian sash windows will ensure 21st-century thermal performance throughout the property, which will help to reduce heating costs.

Georgian design is seen as the era of elegance. They originated in one of the periods of architectural history from 1714 to 1830 when the four King George’s reigned in continuous succession. This traditional window style is still loved by homeowners today.

Our bespoke double-glazed timber windows and doors are manufactured to the highest standards and have a lifespan in excess of 60 years.

They are manufactured with multi-layer, twist & warp resistant timber and factory-finished high-performance micro-porous coatings to achieve superior thermal insulation and exceptional acoustic and high security locking mechanisms exceeding the standard required by the Part Q building regulations without compromising its quintessential Georgian era authentic style.

They can be manufactured with quality materials in various standard and Heritage colours, including Farrow and Ball and a choice of glazing bars.

This farmhouse exemplifies that replacing old single-glazed sash windows with high-performance double-glazed windows and retaining the period sightlines is possible.
