Black Steel Look Gable Window Enhances Loft Style Living, Oxford

Location: Oxford

We recently installed a black steel look-gable window into the dormer roof extension at the rear of a townhouse located on a popular private development a short distance from Oxford.

Oxford, ‘the City of Dreaming Spires,’ is renowned as one of the world’s most prestigious university cities and steeped in history.

Oxfordshire is known for its rich culture and architectural beauty and is also the birthplace of Alice in Wonderland.

The Oxford homeowners purchased the property in 2019 and were keen to increase the living space within their home and extend upwards into the loft by adding a rear box dormer conversion.

The rear of the townhouse overlooks a beautiful leafy vista,, so it was important to the homeowners to make the most of the nature-inspired views and create a light and airy space filled with natural light.

When the Oxford homeowners contacted Thames Valley Windows, their builders had already started the build of the roof extension, so they were on a tight deadline.

The owners knew exactly the style of gable window they required for their dormer roof extension. Still, they were becoming frustrated as most of the other double-glazing companies they had contacted offered a minimal range of options.

Our designer Luke called the Oxford homeowners and listened to their requirements. They wanted a bespoke-shaped dormer window with a heritage look with glazing bars. From their brief, Luke recommended that the aïr MOD Heritage range would be the perfect solution.

As their builder had already provided the opening size, Luke could provide the owners with a quotation. He recommended they make an appointment at our Bracknell showroom to view the different options and alternative window styles we have on display.

After viewing our range of uPVC, timber, composite and aluminium windows on display, the homeowners decided that the Air Mod Heritage offered the overall steel look aesthetic they were looking for to embrace loft-style living.

The final decision to be made was the frame colour. After reviewing the different shades of greys and black, they chose RAL9005 black matt for the exterior and interior.

Due to the bespoke shape, The window design required close attention to detail in the survey and manufacturing process to ensure the steel look gable window features a slim and authentic period look that resembles that of a traditional steel window and provides the characteristics of being preserved.

aïr MOD heritage steel-look aluminium windows are the perfect alternative to steel windows, but at an affordable price, and they won’t rust!

The Heritage window system offers the iconic traditional look of narrow steel frames whilst offering exceptional performance and acoustic sound reduction.
aïr MOD’s innovative thermally broken aluminium Heritage system is an aesthetically appealing solution that can be fitted directly to brick into existing subframes, new timber frames, or stone surrounds.

Suitable for period properties and contemporary new builds and is a popular choice with homeowners, architects and developers in high-end residential and refurbishment projects throughout the UK.

However, the aluminium profiles provide 21st-century energy-efficient performance. The aluminium profiles are manufactured with innovative thermal break technology to reduce thermal transmittance and enhance the overall U Value.

All aïr MOD window styles are designed with carbon footprint reduction and sustainability in mind.

The black steel-look gable windows are durable and secure and come with a Secured by Design accreditation.

All the double-glazed units have a Low E coating. They are toughened and filled with argon gas and a warm-edge spacer bar to achieve an A-rating.

They offer superb thermal performance and increase the home’s overall energy efficiency.

Scaffolding was required for the installation as the fixed gable window frame had to be glazed from the outside (also known as externally glazed), which provides the slimmest sightline.

The end result is stunning. The bold, black frames and clean lines of steel look gable window add an industrial flair to the Oxford townhouse.

The slim sightlines ensure maximum transparency and natural light flow into the loft extension.

Steel look Windows are a trend that shows no sign of dying down with homeowners and interior designers.
