We recently completed the installation of a beautifully detailed Art Deco-style front door for a period property in Tylers Green, close to High Wycombe. This traditional 1930s semi-detached home is located on a desirable residential street. The homeowners are looking for a replacement entrance door that respects its original character while offering modern performance benefits such as improved security and energy efficiency.
The High Wycombe homeowners were keen to enhance their property without compromising its architectural heritage. As lovers of traditional design, they wanted a 1930s front door that reflected the distinctive Art Deco style of the era, with correct proportions, glazing detail and authentic period features. At the same time, the white upvc front door was not in keeping with the traditional aesthetics of the period property, which had become draughty and inefficient, so better insulation and sound reduction were also high priorities.
A showroom appointment was booked with Rob, our Period Homes Specialist, allowing them to explore a range of entrance doors in person. During the visit to our flagship Bracknell showroom, they compared materials including aluminium, timber-alternative uPVC and composite doors, discussing how each option could meet both aesthetic and functional requirements.
After consideration, the High Wycombe homeowners selected the Boxmoor entrance door from the English Door Company, a design inspired by traditional 1930s door craftsmanship. This elegant three-panel layout captures the symmetry and balance typical of art deco style homes from the period.
Six clear glazed sections, separated by slim Georgian-style bars, introduce natural light into the hallway while reinforcing the door’s period appearance. A defining feature of a true 1930s front door is the placement of the mid-rail, which sits higher than on modern designs. This detail has been accurately replicated to maintain the period proportions
Chrome door furniture was chosen to complete the traditional look, adding a subtle contemporary touch while remaining sympathetic to the period architecture.
Manufactured by The English Door Company, the Boxmoor door offers the appearance of traditional timber without the associated maintenance. These high-quality composite-style doors are engineered to replicate classic joinery techniques, including raised-and-fielded panels and timber-look joints.
An 82mm deep outer frame enhances the sense of solidity and closely mirrors the proportions of a handcrafted wooden door. Unlike flat modern designs, this door features subtle contours and detailing that add depth and texture, key elements of authentic period door design.
Behind its traditional appearance, this Art Deco front door incorporates modern engineering for everyday performance. A reinforced aluminium mid-rail provides exceptional rigidity and fixing strength, while a deeper bottom rail improves both durability and visual balance.
The door is fitted with an advanced multi-point locking system for enhanced security and peace of mind. High-performance insulation materials help minimise heat loss, contributing to improved energy efficiency, reduced draughts and a more comfortable home year-round.
For this installation, the High Wycombe homeowners chose an olive grey external finish with a crisp white interior. This heritage-inspired colour works particularly well with the pebble dash exterior and complements the home’s period features.
A wide range of glazing options is available for this style of door, including obscure glass, decorative leadwork and art deco-inspired patterns. These choices allow homeowners to balance privacy with natural light while enhancing the character of a 1930s property.
The new Art Deco-style front door has significantly enhanced the High Wycombe home’s kerb appeal. The new entrance blends timeless art deco style with modern security, comfort and thermal performance. As part of this home renovation, we also installed aïr MOD Contemporary French Grey Aluminium Windows.
